LRV Kärnten in Training
The LRV Kärnten, the Regional Cycling Association of Carinthia, is the umbrella organization for cycling clubs active in Carinthia. It currently supports around 500 members across 30 associations and cycling sections.
This description, taken from the official website, introduces the team that last Saturday participated in a training day at the Bernadia Trail Area. The group of junior bikers (aged 13 to 17), led by coach Uwe Hochenwarter, enjoyed a comprehensive experience in the trail area, exploring every aspect, including the warm hospitality of local businesses.
The group arrived in Nimis on Friday late afternoon after training on the trails of Gemona del Friuli. They settled at the B&B “Ca’ di Fiorendo,” where they had access to a room for a stretching session and a mechanics lesson. For dinner, in preparation for the next day’s training, they opted for a light pizza at “Al Paradiso” in Torlano instead of typical local dishes.
On Saturday morning, some members of Maglia Nera (Alessio, Kevin, and Max) welcomed the group at 9:30 at “Al Posto Giusto.” Together with Uwe and the young bikers, they followed the training session, offering guidance on the technical sections to tackle. The ascent proceeded at a steady but manageable pace, allowing the bikers to admire the stunning views of the plains while Maglia Nera members chatted with Uwe and Diego (the father of one of the athletes and a long-time friend of the BTA).
The first trail of the day, as per tradition, was the Antro Vigant. Here, the young bikers faced the “Sassone,” one of the most technical sections of the BTA. After an explanation of the best lines to follow and a practical demonstration by the coach, the riders tested their skills, showcasing remarkable technical prowess.
The day continued with a quick visit to the Antro di Vigant, a panoramic photo at Villanova, and a stop for water at Leonardo’s bar. At the end of the climb to the Monte Bernadia fort, the group enjoyed the view of the sea on the horizon before heading toward the rocky Forte Alto.
The trail, made slippery by melting snow, proved ideal for practicing balance and control. The main challenge was tackling a steep rocky climb halfway through the route, made difficult by low traction. Only two bikers succeeded, earning applause from everyone.
The morning proceeded smoothly across other trails, with Uwe assigning his riders technical exercises such as climbing on low-grip terrain to reach Zaiama or tackling the Tirfor drop. The session concluded with the descent of Brisicul.
Expectations for this final section were sky-high, and the 10-minute fluid descent on an almost perfect surface (with only a few slippery patches) completely satisfied the LRV Kärnten bikers. The nickname “King of the Bernadia Trail Area” was fully justified, as demonstrated by the riders’ enthusiasm.
The training day ended with a high-speed return along the Cornappo trail. In just over ten minutes, the group arrived back at “Al Posto Giusto,” where Lorenzo and Letizia, always excellent hosts, welcomed them. Bike washing, showers, a pasta Bolognese meal, and plenty of laughter marked the conclusion of this intense day at the BTA.
The collaboration with LRV Kärnten was sealed with a symbolic jersey exchange between the representatives of the two teams, laying the foundation for future initiatives.
